HEAD Wines was started in 2006 by Alex Head. It focuses on single site Rhone varietals from the Barossa and Eden Valleys in South Australia. The ‘House Style’ is one of elegance, freshness, balance and purity of fruit attained by slow-winemaking and careful, gentle attention during maturation. HEAD Wines quickly achieved a Halliday 5 Star Rating, Top 10 New Wineries to Watch and numerous Top 100 Wines.
All vineyards are farmed sustainably using organic principles where possible. Yields are low/controlled and grapes are hand-picked. The ferments use indigenous yeasts with some retention of stems. Minimal sulphur is used during the whole wine-making process and bottling is without fining or filtration.

Graduating from Sydney University in 1997 with a degree in Biochemistry, Alex entered the Wine Industry. After a trip through the major wine-growing vineyards of Europe, he immediately started working in fine-wine management, wholesale importing and an auction house to gain a broad understanding of the world of fine wine. He then worked vintages with the wineries he held in the highest regard; Tyrrells in the Hunter, Torbreck, Laughing Jack and Cirillo Estate in the Barossa Valley followed and in December of 2008 he gained a Producer's Licence and released his first wines to the public.
When I started out in the wine industry, I quickly fell in love with shiraz from the Barossa Valley, South Australia. However, it was the discovery of shiraz from Côte Rotie in France's Rhone Valley that would ultimately give me the inspiration to work as a winemaker.

When I was finishing university and thinking about my career, a wise friend reminded me of the saying, "if you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life". At that time, I didn't know that I had already started my love affair with wine and embarked on a journey that would lead to the beginning of Head Wines.
When a friend approached me about her own "passion project", short films about people who inspired her, I felt humbled. This film is about my journey so far; my love of the Barossa and Barossans and my dream to create great wine that can be shared at the dining table amongst friends, family and good food.
